Introducing Western Psychology to yoga therapy training at LMU YTRx



Yoga Therapy is a synthesis of the ageless wisdom from the East with the most recent knowledge in complementary health from the West. Yoga is a practice for optimizing the health of the body and quieting the mind. It includes a variety of activities, including postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), meditation (dhyana), and lifestyle practices.

As many of us are at different stages of knowledge and experience, there are four certificate programs available (click on links below for more information):
Basic Program (Level 1). The basic program will focus on the musculoskeletal system. Classes will address principles of practice, anatomy for yoga teachers, the origin and treatment of common low back, upper back, knee and hip problems.
Advanced Program (Level 2). The advanced program will focus on the circulatory, respiratory, digestive, nervous, reproductive and endocrine systems. Classes will address principles of practice, anatomy for yoga teachers, the origin and treatment of internal problems.
Clinical Program (Level 3). The clinical program offers an immersive clinical experience, taught seminar style with live and standardized patients, and complete interaction with all program participants.
Internship Program (Level 4). The internship program is designed for students to apply and refine their administrative and clinical skills in an active medical setting under the supervision of resident physicians and instructors.

Julie Carmen is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Julie is Director of Mental Health at Loyola Marymount University Yoga Therapy Rx and Director of Yoga Therapy for Mental Health Supervised Clinical Practicum in co-operation with Venice Family Clinic. She designed and implemented the yoga therapy and drama therapy programs at Passages Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center (2001-2003).

She taught at Monte Nido Eating Disorder Center, LA Unified School District Pregnant Teens Program, Cell Block Theater, Exhale (2001-2013) and she teaches yoga to Suzanne Somers (2003-present). As an actress, Julie danced on Broadway, choreographed off Broadway and starred in over 30 Hollywood films. Photo by Robert Sturman.
